When the Morning is Quiet and God Feels Close

There's something sacred about the early hours.

Before the notifications. Before the to-do list starts whispering. Before the world asks anything of you. In those first quiet minutes — when the light is still soft and the coffee is still brewing — there's a kind of holy hush that doesn't last long.

I've learned to chase it.

The Journal I Almost Didn't Open

This morning I opened my journal and found a verse I'd written months ago. I don't even remember writing it. But there it was, in my own handwriting, underlined twice:

"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10

I sat with that for a long time.

Not because I hadn't read it before — I have, dozens of times. But because I needed it today, in a way I couldn't have planned for. That's the thing about writing scripture down. You're not just recording words. You're leaving a note for your future self. A little breadcrumb back to the place where God met you.

What Stillness Actually Looks Like

I want to be honest with you: stillness doesn't always feel peaceful. Sometimes it feels like sitting with everything you've been avoiding. The worry you haven't prayed through yet. The relationship that's been heavy on your heart. The question you're afraid to ask God because you're not sure you're ready for the answer.

But I've found that God doesn't require us to arrive at stillness perfectly. He just asks us to show up.

Some mornings that looks like a full hour of prayer and journaling. Some mornings it's five minutes with a cup of tea and a single verse. Some mornings it's just sitting in the quiet and saying, "I'm here. I don't have words today, but I'm here."

That counts. It always counts.

A Practice Worth Protecting

If you don't have a morning quiet time, I want to gently encourage you to try it — not as a rule, but as a gift you give yourself.

Start small. Five minutes. One verse. One honest prayer.

You don't need a fancy journal or a perfectly curated space. You just need a few minutes before the world gets loud, and a willingness to let God speak into the quiet.

I promise — He will.

Today's Reflection

What verse has God been putting on your heart lately? If you don't have one, try Psalm 46:10 this week. Read it slowly. Write it down. Let it settle.

And if you have a journal, open it. Even if you haven't written in it for months. Even if the pages feel intimidating. Just write the date, and one honest sentence about where you are today.

That's enough. That's always enough.
